Economics of Disability - Hospital access and Hospital location: the socio-economic déterminants
We found that patients travel for their care, with just one-quarter of them going to the nearest public hospital. The most vulnerable patients (i.e., those socio-economically deprived, and very aged) are mostly treated in local public hospitals with the lowest quality service level, and with large variability in quality as well, while those with less socio-economic deprivation seek care at higher-quality for-profit hospitals.
Director of Research at the CNRS and Professor at the Paris School of Economics (PSE), Prof. Carine Milcent is a specialist in healthcare systems. She is currently in charge of the SAFEPAW “Parcours des patients” project, part of PEPR santé numérique (Inria, Inserm). She spent 10 years working in China and Hong Kong, Switzerland and the United States. She is also one of two researcher representatives on the Comité du secret (CDAP), and provides expert appraisals for the Anses, the Cour des Comptes, Cnam and hospital federations.
The Lausanne Center for Health Economics, Behavior, and Policy (LCHE) at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) promotes research, teaching, and policy advice in the fields of health economics, behavior, and policy.
The interdisciplinary center brings together researchers of the Center for Primary Care and Public Health (Unisanté), the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (CHUV-FBM), and the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC).
